From: The Macedonian
American Council and the Executive Board of POMNI.
An open letter to
President Boris Trajkovski and Prime Minister Ljubco
Georgievski
Sirs,
We depart from the
long standing tradition of sending good-will wishes on this first day of the
year. Instead, we write to you in the name of more than eight million
Macedonians, who feel the pain and suffering of their brethren in Macedonia,
to express our outrage at your inability, not only to govern and perform the
duties for which you have been elected, but for failing to provide the basic
environment of peace, security and order in which the Macedonian people should
live.
Last night, that
is, on New Year's Eve, in the city of Tetovo, more than forty-six thousand
Macedonians, instead of peacefully awaiting the arrival of the new year, were
exposed to the deliberate terror of military attacks by Albanian terrorist
groups and constant firing of arms, including the total burning of the
correctional facility and several other surrounding buildings.
We do not know of
the actual casualties, but this is a blatant and violent continuation of the
series of terrorist attacks upon the innocent Macedonian people in Tetovo and
the neighboring villages, committed against them over the last few weeks, that
include the burning of the medieval church of St.
Nicholas in the village
of Dolna Lesnica and the total destruction of the ninth century ancient church
of St. George in the village of Mala Recica, not to mention countless random
kidnappings and attacks upon Macedonians and their property.
Let us remind you
that this is all happening in a country, which purports to be a sovereign and
independent country, with an army and police force, whose paramount duty is to
protect its citizens. Instead of protection, the innocent Macedonian people
are being humiliated and violated and insulted in front of your very eyes and
in front of the eyes of NATO, OSCE, EU and various other organizations with
whom you are supposed to provide an environment of peace and stability in
Macedonia in all the "contracts" and "agreements" that you have so liberally
signed.
We do not know if
this letter of ours will find you and your cohorts in Macedonia. Perhaps, you
have chosen to celebrate this holiday season abroad, as you are so used to,
but we do wish to remind you, in fact, we do wish to warn you that the people
who are suffering because of your negligence and your inability to govern are
not only our beloved compatriots who are entitled to your protection, but our
parents, our brothers and sisters, who are pleading for help.
It is time for you
to make a final decision and execute your duties as leaders of a country and
protect equally all the citizens of Macedonia, who elected you to serve and
protect them.
